 First, my apologies to who ever is offended by the title of this article on home business.

Okay back to the question. Can every Tom, Dick and Harry start a home business?

I know you may have a different view from mine. But let me first tell you that just like a candle lights up a room, this article was written with the intention of providing some light on home business.

So my answer is that “YES” every one can start a home business. It does not matter where you are from or your  level of education. Every Tom, Dick and Harry can start a home business.

BUT, not every Tom, Dick and Harry will maintain and grow a home business. This is where many people fail. 

What do you need to maintain a home business? You will need to have qualities for home business oriented people.

Below are some of these qualities that will help you to maintain and grow your home business:

 

1-Home business people are careful about money.

They always know how much money they have. They know the value and cost of things so they can recognize a real bargain. That is why they can maintain their home business.

2-Most home business entrepreneurs earned money when they were teenagers— babysitting, mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, sacking groceries etc. They got their patience from here that helps then grow their home business. 

3- home business people are competitive by nature.

Many were active in sports and other competitions in high school and college. Others were competitive in wanting to make good grades, earn the respect of their parents and teachers and achieve their goals. This quality is very important in a home business.

 

4- Home business owner believe in the old adage, "the early bird gets the worm.” They sleep and eat enough to maintain their energy levels but they don't usually linger over non-productive tasks. This helps them focus important energy on growing their home business.

5- Successful home business people are risk-takers who trust their hunches and act on them. Taking risks can be small first steps, like placing your first ad in a mail-order publication. Without this quality, you may not even be able to start a home business, let alone growing a home business.

6-They have a "head for home business.

"They are always thinking of new ideas and new ways to make money or increase their home business. They are not afraid to put these ideas to use. 

7-Home business entrepreneurs are usually loners rather than joiners.

That's one reason why the home business, mail-order business is so appealing to many entrepreneurs. They prefer a solitary work environment (home business)

8- Successful home business are usually honourable people.

They do business based on a handshake or a promise. They tend to form strong associations with others who share this work ethic.

9- Home business people do set aside time for leisure activities and family. Their principal form of relaxation is their work, but they do realize the importance of downtime and spend time with their family. 

10- Home business people don't retire. They may sell or change their business, thinking they will retire, but they always jump back in with a new project or get a new idea that they just can't ignore. 

11-Successful home business is professionals. Whether working from their bedroom, the kitchen table or a modern, well-appointed home office, they operate just as they would if they were in an expensive office building in a major city. When they are working, they don't let outside influences distract them.

In general, successful home business is people who have high energy; feel self-confident, set long-term goals, and view money and financial security as a measure of accomplishment and piece of mind. They persist in problem solving, take risks, learn from failures (their own and from others), take the initiative, accept personal responsibility and use all available resources to achieve their success. Successful home business people compete with themselves and believe that success or failure lies within their personal control or influence

Well, I hope this article will benefit who ever wants to start a home business.

Just keep in mind that every one can start a home business, but what differentiates between the successful home business owners and the failures are as out lined above. Take care.

 Buying a franchise can be a life changing experience. There are many good reasons to pursue your dream of owning a successful franchise. For starters when you buy a franchise you are buying a proven system. Buying a franchise comes with the advantage of knowing that the business has been successful in other locations. The idea and process of running this business has already been proven. Therefore the learning curve in operating the business can be virtually eliminated.

When you are buying a franchise your are also buying an established customer base or brand name. Most franchises are already recognizable to consumers. The brand awareness provides security and trust to the customer who expects uniform quality to be provided. Therefore a customer base is already established.

You can also benefit from any advertising or promotion that the franchiser (owner of the franchise) does at the national or local level, without absorbing the cost. The franchiser can also provide input to the franchisee on a local marketing plan.

If you buy a franchise you also receive ongoing support. Training and support is usually always part of the deal. Since the franchise company has a vested interest in how well you do, ongoing training, system upgrades, product enhancements, and question and answer resources are provided. The franchiser offers experience to franchisee in such areas as accounting procedures, personnel and facility management, and business planning.

Also, many times obtaining financing for buying a franchise is easier since the franchise name and reputation are usually recognized by the lenders. Therefore, banks are more likely to fund the franchisee. In addition, relationships with suppliers are already established; affording the opportunity to buy in bulk, enabling a great deal of savings for the business.

The first step when buying a franchise is choosing an industry you are interested in or have prior experience in. There are many great franchises out there to choose from. Auto franchises and coffee franchises are very popular franchises but it is important to research the each opportunity before investing. It is recommended you sit down with a Franchise Consultant and decide if buying a franchise is right for you.

Business Systems - Not Just For Big Business

 When I mention business systems to you, what comes to mind?  Do you think of an IBM mainframe computer sitting in a big room in the middle of your building?  Do you think of expensive, highly specialized software?  That’s what many small business owners imagine.  And they think it’s not for them.  If that’s what you think, you’re only half right.  

Half right because expensive, highly specialized software is probably not for you.  Half wrong because good business systems most definitely are.  A business system isn’t hardware or software.  It’s the way that you do any part of your business.  It’s how you do things.  You are using systems all the time, you just may not be using them efficiently.

I regularly urge business owners to get everything they know about their business out of their head and onto paper.  I’m urging you now to do the same with your systems.  Start writing out how you do things in your business.  At a minimum, write out how you treat your customers or clients, how your paperwork for each sale flows, how your production systems work, how you market to clients, and how you do your bookkeeping.

Do this in detail.  For each area, make a very detailed description of every step in the process.  Include what you do and why you do it.  Include the subtle parts that make your company uniquely you.  Include the parts that you are proud of.  Include the tricks that make it efficient.  Include what you tried that didn’t work and explain why.  Each system should become a very rich, highly detailed system.  Why so much detail?

Because this is the beginning of being able to consistently deliver results.  And the beginning of being able to consistently deliver results even when you aren’t around.  Documented (written) systems make delegating much more manageable.  Delegating is one of the keys to success in growing your business while still having a life.

Maybe you don’t want a bigger business.  Maybe you want to keep yours small.  Still, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to go on a long vacation and turn the keys over to someone else to run and make money for you while you are gone?  Without systems, that wouldn’t be remotely possible.  With systems almost anything is.  Now, does that sound like something that should only be for big business?  I think not.

Business Support Systems - Your Family is Key

 Business support systems are critical to your business success.  The most important business support system is your family.  The spousal relationship is particularly key to your ability to launch and operate a successful business.

If your spouse or significant other is against your business, then you are missing a huge portion of the business support system you need to sustain yourself.  Running a small business is a family affair.  Whether your family thinks they are involved or not, they are.  They truly are the largest source of support your business will get.

Impact of Negativity

If your family is negative about your business then this influence will almost wipe out any other business support systems you have in place.  It’s going to be tough for the next couple of months while you get your business off the ground.  A strong, positive, encouraging business support system will sustain you through the lows and temper you through the highs.  

Negativity, on the other hand, will kill your business faster than anything else.  If you are hearing all day that you're no good, you're business is crappy, you're ruining your life, blah blah blah blah, you will go down a black hole with the rest of the business support systems you so carefully put in place.  

The Bottom Line on Business Support Systems

You need to have positive business support systems and the main source of this support is your family.  If your family is not going to be supportive then the circumstances are not optimal for your launch. Despite all the other business support systems you may have in place, your family trumps them all.  Think seriously about where your family rates in your business support system and then decide if now is really the right time to start your business.

 Business startup funding is always a worry.  Do I have enough money to start? Can I quit my job to concentrate full time?  Will I be able to cover my monthly expenses?

    

When the time comes to actually launch your business you must have done your homework regarding your business startup funding needs.  You need to be prepared so that if the opportunity to accelerate your launch presents itself, you're ready.

Limit the job to 15 - 20 hours per week so you leave enough time to concentrate on building your business.  Whether it’s teaching some computer courses at the college or working at an electronics store, you have to be bringing is some reliable income.  This reliable income will give you the cushion you need to spend time building your client base.  

    

Securing adequate business startup funding is one of the most challenging aspects of launching a small business.  You don't want to minimize its importance though.  Inadequate business startup funding is at the root of many business failures.

 Business plan outlines vary in their complexity.  Depending on your situation you may just want to follow a very basic business plan outline.  Regardless, the process of sitting down, creating a business plan outline, and writing a business plan is one of the most valuable exercises you will do.

List your business credentials - why are you qualified to start this business and sell your products and services?

List your staff:  Is it going to be just yourself, or do you have a definite plan in terms of when you are going to hire sales, technical, or administrative staff?

Project revenue:  Will you be selling services, products, or a combination of both?

How much revenue will come from products?  How much profit will come from products?

How much revenue will come from services?  How much profit will come from services?

Sales and marketing plan:  outline your major sales and marketing activities - the things that you're going to do to bring in key, sweet spot clients. Talk about what you're doing on a month-by-month or week-by-week basis. How much time you think it’s going to take up and how much money you think it’s going to cost to execute. 

Operations: Where will you be located? Home office or rented space? How will you get to your clients' places of business?  Personal car or leased vehicle? Will you need to rent facilities from time to time for meetings, seminars, etc...

Finance:  What capital do you need to start?  Where will you get this capital? Where will you get additional capital during your first year in business?

Salary and Payroll:  What are your expectations for your personal salary or drawings.  Do you have to pay staff as well?

Expertise of principals:  What makes you and/or your partners qualified? What kind of skills and experience do you bring to the table that will be of valuable to this business venture and valuable to the clients you want to pursue?
